San Francisco Examiner Little Bear

In October 1893, Jimmy Swinnerton began illustrating "initials" of articles of The San Francisco Examiner about the upcoming San Francisco Mid-Winter Exposition of 1894.  (These initial illustrations were fairly common in newspapers at the time.)  These initials featured a bear, based on the state mascot of the bear "Monarch", which would quickly become popular and be picked up as a mascot for the paper, and continued well after the closing of the fair.

The bear dropped away in July 1894 shortly after the closing of the fair, but on October 2, 1894 reappears as a weather illustration.

He wasn't the first weather illustration for the paper, though.  for a little while before him was this 'weathergirl', which has a small set of reused drawings.

The bear would appear daily, I believe, until 1934.
